Cold Water Reset

BodyAbout 1 minute

Cool water on your face taps an ancient reflex, the dive response, that slows your heart within seconds. The reflex lives in your face, especially around the eyes and temples; the wrists are mostly for comfort. Splashing is the gentle version, and gentle is enough here.

When to use it

For the spike: when intensity needs interrupting right now.

Two minutes, kept for you

2:00

How to do it

  1. 1.Run cold water over your wrists for thirty seconds.
  2. 2.Splash your face, especially your temples and around your eyes.
  3. 3.Hold a cool, damp cloth to the back of your neck.
  4. 4.Take three deep breaths as the coolness spreads.

What to notice

A jolt of alertness, then a deep calm right behind it. Your body proving it can meet intensity and come back down.

What the research says

The dive response is real, ancient physiology: cool water on the face, especially around the eyes and temples, slows the heart within seconds. One small trial found people recovered from lab stress faster, with a smaller stress-hormone spike, after cold to the face. Location matters: in the study that compared sites, the forearm did nothing, so the wrists are comfort rather than mechanism. Splashing is the gentle version of a reflex that runs deep, and gentle is enough here.
