Grounding 5-4-3-2-1

GroundAbout 1-2 minutes

When you're triggered, your mind time-travels to old pain or imagined futures. Naming what your senses can actually reach pulls attention back to this room, this minute. Counselors have used this exercise for decades. It has never needed to be complicated to help.

When to use it

For when your mind has left the room and you need it back.

Two minutes, kept for you

2:00

How to do it

  1. 1.Name five things you can see, really looking at colors and textures.
  2. 2.Four things you can touch.
  3. 3.Three things you can hear.
  4. 4.Two things you can smell.
  5. 5.One thing you can taste.

What to notice

Your breath deepening on its own. Your feet on the floor. The simple, solid fact of it: this chair, this floor, this breath, here.

What the research says

Honesty first: this exercise itself has never been formally tested. It grew out of counseling practice, passed hand to hand since the early nineties, and it sits inside trauma-stabilization programs that do have evidence as a whole. That is the truthful shape of it: a clinical staple with decades of use, no trial of its own, and a job so simple, naming what your senses can reach, that it may never need one.
