The Physiological Sigh

BreathAbout 30 seconds

One of the quickest ways science has found to settle your body on purpose. In the best study so far, five minutes a day of this breath lifted mood more than meditation did over a month. Even one long sigh can bring a moment of relief: your body already uses this move on its own.

When to use it

For the moment you notice you're holding your breath, or need to come down fast.

Two minutes, kept for you

2:00

How to do it

  1. 1.Inhale through your nose until your lungs feel mostly full.
  2. 2.Then, before exhaling, sneak in a second short sip of air.
  3. 3.Now exhale slowly through your mouth, long and complete, with a soft "ahh" if you like.
  4. 4.Repeat one to three times.

What to notice

Your chest softening. Your jaw letting go. A settling feeling in your belly. That's your nervous system standing down.

What the research says

The best study so far took a hundred people and had them practice five minutes a day for a month. The ones doing this breath ended up in a better mood, day over day, than the ones meditating, and their resting breathing slowed. It didn't move every measure researchers looked at, so nobody can tell you exactly why it helps yet. Separate lab work found that even one instructed deep sigh brings a small, real moment of relief. Small studies, honest promise: quick relief now, a little more ease with practice.
